At Integrative Medicine Lake Country, our regenerative injections are designed to support healing within joints, tendons, ligaments, and other musculoskeletal tissues—especially for those dealing with chronic pain, osteoarthritis, or soft-tissue injury. By using autologous biologics like platelet-rich plasma (PRP), we aim to reduce inflammation, promote tissue repair, and improve function in a way that complements your body’s natural healing.


Evidence & What the Research Shows

  • A recent meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials finds PRP injections significantly reduce pain and improve function in knee osteoarthritis compared with placebo or hyaluronic acid.  
  • In many studies, patients report meaningful relief lasting 6 to 12 months after joint PRP injections, especially in mild to moderate disease.  
  • Adding hyaluronic acid (HA) to PRP has been shown in randomized trials and meta-analyses to further improve outcomes in knee osteoarthritis: better pain relief (VAS scores), function (WOMAC and Lequesne indices), and quality of life than PRP alone.

Hyaluronic Acid for Joint Health

If you’re dealing with persistent joint discomfort, reduced mobility, or early osteoarthritic changes — especially after conservative measures (exercise, physical therapy, supplements, anti-inflammatories) haven’t delivered the outcomes you want — then intra-articular hyaluronic acid (HA) injections may be a valuable option. Here’s how they work, what to expect, and who may benefit most.

How It Works

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan found in high concentrations in healthy synovial (joint) fluid. In a healthy joint, this fluid acts as both a lubricant and shock absorber, allowing cartilage surfaces to glide smoothly and helping distribute mechanical load [1].

In the setting of joint degeneration (such as early osteoarthritis), the quantity and quality of synovial hyaluronic acid decrease, leading to reduced viscosity, increased friction, stiffness, and pain [2].

By injecting HA directly into the joint (intra-articular), the treatment aims to:

  • Restore viscosity and lubrication of the joint fluid — reducing friction and mechanical stress on cartilage [3].
     
  • Enhance shock absorption and improve joint biomechanics [4].
     
  • Potentially reduce inflammation and modulate joint-cell behavior (for example, improving chondrocyte function, promoting proteoglycan synthesis, or modulating the synovial environment) [2].
     
  • Delay progression of joint degeneration and even delay the need for more invasive interventions in some patients [5].
     

What You Can Expect

  • Onset: Some patients report improvement in pain or mobility within 2–4 weeks following the injection. One study found significant reduction in pain and improvement in function at 4 weeks [6].
     
  • Duration: The clinical benefit may last several months (commonly 3–6 months) although individual results vary [7].
     
  • Injection protocols: Depending on the product, you may receive a single injection or a series (typically 2–5 injections spaced over several weeks) to optimize effect. Some evidence suggests 2–4 injections may provide more consistent benefit at 3 and 6 months [8].
     
  • Safety: This is generally a low-risk procedure. Typical side effects include transient joint discomfort, swelling, or stiffness post-injection. Serious adverse events are uncommon [9].
     
  • What it’s not: It is not a “cure” for joint degeneration. It supports symptom relief and function — but does not replace the need for broader joint-health strategies (e.g., load management, muscle strengthening, nutrition, weight control, and addressing systemic inflammation). Some high-quality reviews note that the magnitude of benefit can be modest and may not be clinically meaningful in all cases [10].

  • Have early to moderate joint degeneration (for example knee, hip, or shoulder) and are still retaining joint space and mobility. Research suggests better outcomes when degeneration is less advanced [11].
     
  • Experience persistent joint pain, stiffness, or reduced function that has not adequately improved with first-line conservative treatments (physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, lifestyle modification).
     
  • Want an integrative approach that avoids or delays more invasive interventions (such as joint replacement) and complements other functional strategies for joint health (nutrition, movement, regenerative therapies).
